Therapy for men

You don’t have to be falling apart to need therapy. Maybe you’re doing fine at work but struggling at home. Maybe you’re successful but unhappy. Maybe your relationship is suffering. Maybe you’re constantly stressed and can’t switch off. Or maybe you just have a feeling that things aren’t quite right, but you can’t put your finger on why.I work with men in North London and online who want to understand what’s going on and make some changes.

Why therapy?

A lot of men I work with aren’t particularly comfortable asking for help. Many have spent years working things out themselves - they just 'get on with things', keep busy, work harder and try to stay in control.

That can get you a long way, but it doesn’t work forever because something will happen to throw you off course: a relationship struggling; work becoming too much; becoming a parent; losing someone; or just realising you're not as happy as you cold be.

That’s often when people start thinking about therapy.

What might bring you to therapy?

- “I’m stressed all the time.”

You can’t switch off. You’re thinking about work when you’re at home and home when you’re at work.

- “My relationship isn’t working.”

You’re arguing, withdrawing or avoiding difficult conversations. You might feel like you and your partner have stopped understanding each other.

- “I’m angry all the time.”

You find yourself getting irritated by things that wouldn’t normally bother you.

- “I’ve lost my motivation.”

You’re getting through the day, but you don’t feel particularly interested in much anymore.

- “I don’t know what I feel.”

You know something isn’t right but find it difficult to talk about it or even work out what you’re feeling.

- “My life looks good. So why am I unhappy?”

This can be one of the hardest things to admit.

It’s possible to be successful, have people who love you and still feel lost or unhappy.

What happens in therapy?

There’s no particular way you’re 'supposed' to do therapy. There's no prep needed.

We’ll start with what’s happening in your life now. I’ll want to understand what’s brought you here, what’s difficult at the moment and what you’d like to be different.

As we go, we’ll look at some of the patterns that might be affecting you — including patterns in relationships, ways of dealing with difficult emotions and things you may have learned earlier in life.

Sometimes that means talking about the past. Sometimes it means focusing very much on what’s happening now. We’ll work it out together.
